It was a sunny Saturday afternoon. Tom was playing in the park with his friends. They decided to climb the big oak tree. Tom climbed higher than the other children. He wanted to reach the highest branch. Suddenly, his foot slipped on the wet bark. Tom fell down from the tree. He landed on his left arm. Tom screamed in pain. His friends ran to help him. 'Are you okay?' asked Sarah. 'My arm hurts so much,' Tom cried. His arm was starting to swell. Sarah called Tom's mother on her phone. 'Tom fell from a tree and hurt his arm!' she said. Tom's mother drove to the park immediately. When she saw Tom, she was very worried. 'We need to go to the hospital,' she said. She carefully helped Tom get into the car. At the hospital, a nurse greeted them. 'What happened to you?' the nurse asked Tom. 'I fell from a tree,' Tom explained. The nurse took them to a room to wait for the doctor. Tom was nervous about what would happen. 'Will it hurt?' he asked his mother. 'The doctors will take care of you,' she said gently. Soon, Doctor Martinez came into the room. 'Hello Tom, let me look at your arm,' she said. She carefully touched his arm in different places. 'Does this hurt?' she asked. 'Yes, that hurts a lot!' Tom said. 'I think your arm might be broken,' said the doctor. 'We need to take an X-ray to be sure.' A nurse took Tom to the X-ray room. He had to hold his arm very still for the picture. After a few minutes, Doctor Martinez returned. 'The X-ray shows that your arm is broken,' she said. Tom's mother looked worried. 'Will he need surgery?' she asked. 'No, the break is clean,' the doctor explained. 'We will put a cast on his arm.' 'What color cast would you like?' asked the nurse. 'Can I have a blue one?' Tom asked excitedly. 'Of course you can!' said the nurse with a smile. The nurse wrapped Tom's arm in soft bandages first. Then she put the blue cast over the bandages. 'You must keep this dry,' the nurse explained. 'No swimming or baths for six weeks.' 'Six weeks?' Tom asked sadly. 'Yes, but your bone will heal completely,' said the doctor. The doctor gave Tom some medicine for the pain. 'Take this twice a day,' she instructed. Tom and his mother thanked the doctor and the nurse. When Tom got home, his father was waiting. 'Are you feeling better now?' his father asked. 'Yes, the medicine helps,' Tom replied. The next day at school, everyone wanted to see Tom's cast. 'Can we sign it?' asked his classmates. Tom smiled and let everyone write their names. Sarah wrote 'Get well soon!' with a heart. Six weeks passed slowly for Tom. He could not play sports or climb trees. But he learned to do many things with one arm. Finally, the day came to remove the cast. Tom went back to the hospital with his mother. Doctor Martinez used a special saw to cut the cast. 'Does that hurt?' Tom asked nervously. 'No, the saw only cuts the hard plaster,' she explained. When the cast came off, Tom's arm looked thin and pale. 'That is normal,' said the doctor. 'Your muscles will get stronger again with exercise.' Tom was happy to move his arm freely again. 'Be more careful next time you climb trees,' his mother said. 'I will, Mom,' Tom promised with a smile.
