My grandmother wanted to learn how to use email. She was seventy years old, but she was very curious about technology. One Saturday morning, I visited her house to help. She had a new laptop on the kitchen table. 'I bought this last week,' she said proudly. I smiled and sat down next to her. 'First, we need to create an email account,' I explained. I opened the web browser and typed in the address. A colorful page appeared on the screen. 'Click on the blue button that says Create Account,' I told her. She moved the mouse slowly and clicked. A new page asked for her information. 'Write your first name here,' I said, pointing to the box. She typed her name carefully with two fingers. 'Now we need to choose a username,' I said. 'What is a username?' she asked. 'It is the name that comes before the at symbol in your email address,' I explained. She thought for a moment. 'Can I use my name?' she asked. 'Yes, but you might need to add some numbers if the name is already taken,' I replied. She chose her name with her birth year. The website accepted it. 'Now you need to create a password,' I said. 'A password is a secret word that keeps your account safe,' I added. She wrote down her password in a small notebook. 'Good idea,' I said, 'but keep that notebook in a safe place.' She typed the password carefully and clicked the next button. The website asked for a phone number for security. She entered her mobile phone number. A code arrived on her phone a few seconds later. 'Type this code into the box on the screen,' I instructed. She did it perfectly. A message appeared saying the account was ready. 'Congratulations!' I said, 'You now have an email address!' My grandmother smiled happily. 'But how do I write an email?' she asked. 'Let me show you,' I said. I clicked on the button with the pencil icon. A new window opened for writing a message. 'In this box, you write the email address of the person you want to contact,' I explained. 'And here you write the subject, which tells them what the email is about.' My grandmother nodded, paying close attention. 'The big space below is where you write your message,' I continued. 'When you are finished, click Send.' 'Can I practice now?' she asked eagerly. 'Of course! Send me an email,' I suggested. I gave her my email address, and she wrote it down. She typed my address in the first box very carefully. For the subject, she wrote 'Hello from Grandma.' In the message, she typed: 'Dear grandson, this is my first email. I am so happy! Love, Grandma.' She looked at me before clicking Send. 'Go ahead,' I encouraged her. She pressed the button with a big smile. A message appeared saying the email was sent. A few seconds later, my phone made a sound. 'I got your email!' I announced, showing her my phone. My grandmother clapped her hands with joy. 'I did it! I really did it!' she exclaimed. That afternoon, she practiced sending emails to other family members. Everyone was surprised to receive a message from her. My grandmother was very proud of herself. 'Thank you for teaching me,' she said, giving me a warm hug. 'You are never too old to learn something new,' I replied. Now my grandmother sends emails every day. She even learned how to add photos to her messages. Technology can connect people of all ages.
