Phileas Fogg was a wealthy English gentleman who lived in London. He was a very precise man who followed the same routine every day. One day, Fogg went to his gentleman's club as usual. He read in the newspaper that it was now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. His friends at the club did not believe this was possible. Fogg made a bet with them for twenty thousand pounds. He promised to return to London in exactly 80 days. That same evening, Fogg left London with his new servant, Passepartout. Passepartout was a French man who wanted a quiet life. He was surprised when his new master told him about the journey. They took a train to Dover and then a boat across the English Channel. From France, they continued by train through Europe. Meanwhile, a detective named Fix believed that Fogg was a bank robber. Fix followed them throughout the entire journey. The travelers reached Italy and then took a ship to Egypt. They passed through the Suez Canal, which had recently opened. From Suez, they sailed to India. In India, they discovered that the railway was not finished. They had to buy an elephant to continue their journey. While traveling through a forest, they heard strange noises. They saw a group of people in a religious ceremony. A young Indian woman named Aouda was going to be killed. Fogg and Passepartout decided to save her. Passepartout created a clever plan to rescue Aouda. The rescue was successful, and Aouda joined them on their journey. They traveled to Calcutta and then took a ship to Hong Kong. Detective Fix was still following them, waiting for his chance. In Hong Kong, Passepartout accidentally got separated from Fogg. Fix had tricked Passepartout to delay the journey. Fogg and Aouda had to continue without Passepartout to Japan. They arrived in Yokohama and searched for Passepartout. They found him working in a circus to earn money for his journey. The group was reunited and sailed across the Pacific Ocean to America. They arrived in San Francisco with only a few weeks left. They took a train across America toward New York. The train was attacked by a group of robbers. Passepartout bravely helped to stop the robbers. However, during the fight, the robbers took Passepartout away. Fogg organized a rescue with the help of soldiers. They saved Passepartout but lost precious time. They missed their ship from New York to England. Fogg found another ship and paid the captain extra money to go faster. The ship ran out of coal, so they burned parts of the ship for fuel. They finally reached Ireland and took a train to London. Detective Fix arrested Fogg as soon as they arrived in England. Fogg spent several hours in jail before he was released. The real bank robber had already been caught. Fogg believed he had lost the bet and returned home very sad. But Passepartout discovered something amazing. By traveling east, they had gained one day. They still had time to win the bet. Fogg rushed to the gentleman's club. He arrived just in time to win the bet. His friends were amazed that he had completed the journey. Fogg had won twenty thousand pounds. But the journey had cost almost as much as the prize. Fogg did not care about the money. He had found something more valuable during his journey. Fogg asked Aouda to marry him, and she said yes. They lived happily together in London for the rest of their lives.
