1Basic Reported Speech
Reported speech uses 'que' (that) after reporting verbs. Pronouns and time expressions must change.
Reporting Verbs

2Tense Shifts
When the reporting verb is in past tense, the tense in the reported clause shifts back.

Examples
Il a dit: 'Je suis fatigué' → Il a dit qu'il était fatigué.
He said he was tired.
présent → imparfait
Elle a dit: 'J'ai fini' → Elle a dit qu'elle avait fini.
She said she had finished.
passé composé → plus-que-parfait
Il a dit: 'Je viendrai' → Il a dit qu'il viendrait.
He said he would come.
futur → conditionnel
Elle a dit: 'Je vais partir' → Elle a dit qu'elle allait partir.
She said she was going to leave.
futur proche → allait + inf
3Indirect Questions
Indirect questions don't use est-ce que or inversion. Use si for yes/no questions, question words for others.

He asked me where I lived.

Dis-moi quand tu arrives.
Tell me when you're arriving.

4Time and Place Changes
Time and place expressions change in reported speech when the reporting context differs.

Examples
Il a dit: 'Je pars demain' → Il a dit qu'il partait le lendemain.
He said he was leaving the next day.
demain → le lendemain
Elle a dit: 'J'étais ici hier' → Elle a dit qu'elle était là la veille.
She said she was there the day before.
hier → la veille
Il m'a dit: 'Viens maintenant' → Il m'a dit de venir tout de suite.
He told me to come right away.
imperative → de + infinitive
Elle a dit: 'C'est aujourd'hui' → Elle a dit que c'était ce jour-là .
She said it was that day.
aujourd'hui → ce jour-lĂ
