1Formation with Avoir
The plus-que-parfait is formed with the imperfect tense of avoir or être plus the past participle. Most verbs use avoir: j'avais parlé (I had spoken). The imperfect of avoir is: j'avais, tu avais, il avait, nous avions, vous aviez, ils avaient. The past participle follows the same rules as the passé composé.

2Formation with Être
Verbs of movement and reflexive verbs use être in the plus-que-parfait, just as in the passé composé. The imperfect of être is: j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient. Remember that the past participle agrees with the subject in gender and number: elle était partie (she had left).

3Using Plus-que-parfait in Context

4Negative and Question Forms
To make the plus-que-parfait negative, place ne...pas around the auxiliary verb: Je n'avais pas compris (I hadn't understood). For questions, invert the subject and auxiliary: Avais-tu fini? (Had you finished?). With est-ce que, keep normal word order: Est-ce qu'il avait téléphoné?
