Basic Word Order

Learn the fundamental word order rules in Norwegian, including the important V2 rule that puts the verb in second position. Master how to form statements and questions correctly.

1Basic SVO Word Order

Norwegian basic word order is Subject-Verb-Object (SVO), similar to English. In simple statements, the subject comes first, followed by the verb, then the object or other elements. This straightforward order makes Norwegian relatively easy for English speakers to learn at the basic level.

Examples

Jeg leser en bok.

I read a book.

Subject (Jeg) + Verb (leser) + Object (en bok)

Hun spiser frokost.

She eats breakfast.

Standard SVO order

Vi bor i Oslo.

We live in Oslo.

Subject + Verb + Place

De liker norsk mat.

They like Norwegian food.

Subject + Verb + Object

2The V2 Rule (Verb Second)

The most important word order rule in Norwegian is "V2" - the verb must be in the SECOND position in main clauses. When another element (like a time expression) starts the sentence, the subject moves after the verb. This inversion is mandatory and automatic. "I dag spiser jeg" (Today eat I) not "I dag jeg spiser" (Today I eat).

Examples

I dag spiser jeg pizza.

Today I eat pizza.

Time first → verb second → subject third

I morgen kommer han.

Tomorrow he comes.

Time (I morgen) + Verb (kommer) + Subject (han)

Der bor min bestemor.

There lives my grandmother.

Place first, then verb, then subject

Nå forstår jeg!

Now I understand!

NÃ¥ (now) triggers inversion

3Yes/No Questions

For yes/no questions, the verb moves to the first position. This is called V1 (verb-first) order. The subject follows immediately after the verb. There is no auxiliary verb like English "do" - just move the main verb to the front and use rising intonation.

Examples

Snakker du norsk?

Do you speak Norwegian?

Verb (Snakker) + Subject (du) - no 'do'

Bor han i Bergen?

Does he live in Bergen?

Verb first for questions

Har du tid?

Do you have time?

Har (verb) + du (subject)

Er det dyrt?

Is it expensive?

Er first for 'to be' questions

4Question Words (Hvem, Hva, Hvor)

Questions with question words (hvem, hva, hvor, når, hvorfor, hvordan) follow V2 order: question word first, verb second, then subject. Common question words: hvem (who), hva (what), hvor (where), når (when), hvorfor (why), hvordan (how).

Examples

Hva heter du?

What is your name?

Hva (what) + heter (verb) + du (subject)

Hvor bor du?

Where do you live?

Hvor (where) + bor (verb) + du (subject)

NÃ¥r kommer toget?

When does the train come?

NÃ¥r (when) + verb + subject

Hvorfor lærer du norsk?

Why are you learning Norwegian?

Hvorfor (why) + lærer + du

5Negation with 'ikke'

The negation word "ikke" (not) typically comes after the verb in main clauses. This is similar to the position of "not" in English after auxiliary verbs. In subordinate clauses, "ikke" comes before the verb, but at the A1 level, focus on main clause placement.

Examples

Jeg snakker ikke spansk.

I don't speak Spanish.

Subject + Verb + ikke + Object

Han kommer ikke i dag.

He's not coming today.

ikke after the verb

Vi har ikke tid.

We don't have time.

har ikke = don't have

Det er ikke sant.

It's not true.

er ikke = is not
