Er was eens een prins. De prins wil met een echte prinses trouwen. Hij reist de wereld rond om haar te vinden. Hij ontmoet veel prinsessen. Maar geen van hen is een echte prinses. De prins komt verdrietig thuis. Op een nacht is er een vreselijke storm. Het regent heel hard. Iemand klopt op de kasteeldeur. De oude koning opent de deur. Een jonge vrouw staat buiten. Ze is heel nat van de regen. 'Ik ben een echte prinses,' zegt ze. De oude koningin heeft een idee. Ze legt een kleine erwt op het bed. Dan legt ze twintig matrassen boven op de erwt. De prinses slaapt op dit heel hoge bed. De volgende ochtend stelt de koningin haar een vraag. 'Hoe heb je geslapen?' vraagt de koningin. 'Heel slecht!' zegt de prinses. 'Er was iets hards in het bed.' Nu weten ze dat ze een echte prinses is. Alleen een echte prinses kan een erwt onder twintig matrassen voelen. De prins en de prinses trouwen. En ze leven nog lang en gelukkig.
