Tom is een leerling. Hij is 10 jaar oud. Mevrouw de Vries is zijn lerares. Ze is heel aardig. Vandaag heeft Tom een vraag over wiskunde. 'Pardon, mevrouw de Vries,' zegt Tom. 'Ja, Tom? Hoe kan ik je helpen?' vraagt ze. 'Ik begrijp dit probleem niet,' zegt Tom. Hij laat zijn boek aan mevrouw de Vries zien. 'Welk probleem is het?' vraagt mevrouw de Vries. 'Nummer vijf,' antwoordt Tom. Mevrouw de Vries kijkt naar het probleem. 'Dit gaat over het optellen van getallen,' zegt ze. 'Laat me het je uitleggen.' Mevrouw de Vries pakt een stuk papier. 'Eerst hebben we 12 appels,' schrijft ze. 'Dan voegen we nog 8 appels toe.' 'Dus, 12 plus 8 is gelijk aan...?' vraagt ze Tom. Tom denkt even na. '20!' zegt hij blij. 'Dat klopt! Goed gedaan, Tom!' zegt mevrouw de Vries. Tom glimlacht. 'Bedankt voor de hulp!' 'Graag gedaan,' zegt mevrouw de Vries. 'Vraag altijd als je iets niet begrijpt.' Tom gaat terug naar zijn bureau. Nu kan hij de andere problemen ook oplossen. Hij is blij dat hij om hulp heeft gevraagd.
