1Regular -ARE Verbs
The passato remoto of -are verbs is formed by removing -are and adding: -ai, -asti, -ò, -ammo, -aste, -arono. This tense describes completed actions in the remote past. In Northern Italy, it's mainly literary; in Southern Italy, it's used in everyday speech.

2Regular -ERE and -IRE Verbs
For -ere verbs: remove -ere and add -ei/-etti, -esti, -é/-ette, -emmo, -este, -erono/-ettero. For -ire verbs: remove -ire and add -ii, -isti, -ì, -immo, -iste, -irono. Note that -ere verbs often have two acceptable forms for io, lui/lei, and loro.

3Irregular Verbs: Essere and Avere
Essere and avere have completely irregular passato remoto forms that must be memorized. Essere: fui, fosti, fu, fummo, foste, furono. Avere: ebbi, avesti, ebbe, avemmo, aveste, ebbero. These are among the most frequently used verbs in Italian.

4Common Irregular Verbs
Many common verbs have irregular passato remoto forms. Fare: feci, facesti, fece, facemmo, faceste, fecero. Venire: venni, venisti, venne, venimmo, veniste, vennero. Dire: dissi, dicesti, disse, dicemmo, diceste, dissero. Note the patterns: double consonants and vowel changes.
