Il était une fois un prince. Le prince veut épouser une vraie princesse. Il voyage autour du monde pour la trouver. Il rencontre beaucoup de princesses. Mais aucune d'elles n'est une vraie princesse. Le prince rentre chez lui triste. Une nuit, il y a une terrible tempête. Il pleut très fort. Quelqu'un frappe à la porte du château. Le vieux roi ouvre la porte. Une jeune femme se tient dehors. Elle est très mouillée par la pluie. 'Je suis une vraie princesse,' dit-elle. La vieille reine a une idée. Elle met un petit pois sur le lit. Puis elle met vingt matelas par-dessus le petit pois. La princesse dort sur ce lit très haut. Le lendemain matin, la reine lui pose une question. 'Comment avez-vous dormi?' demande la reine. 'Très mal!' dit la princesse. 'Il y avait quelque chose de dur dans le lit.' Maintenant ils savent qu'elle est une vraie princesse. Seule une vraie princesse peut sentir un petit pois sous vingt matelas. Le prince et la princesse se marient. Et ils vécurent heureux pour toujours.
