1Että-clauses (That-clauses)
Reported speech uses 'että' (that) to introduce what someone said. The tense often shifts.
Reporting Verbs

Examples
Hän sanoi, että hän tulee huomenna.
He/She said that he/she would come tomorrow.

Pekka told that the meeting was cancelled.
past reported
Luulen, että sataa huomenna.
I think that it will rain tomorrow.

2Indirect Questions
Indirect questions use question words without question inversion. The word order follows statement order.

3Yes/No Indirect Questions
For yes/no questions, use '-ko/-kö' attached to the main verb in the subordinate clause, or use 'jos'.

4Tense in Reported Speech
Finnish often keeps the original tense in reported speech, unlike English which shifts tenses back.
Tense Patterns

Examples
Hän sanoi, että on sairas.
He/She said that they are sick.
Finnish keeps present
Hän kertoi, että oli käynyt Pariisissa.
He/She told that they had visited Paris.
past perfect reported
Hän lupasi, että auttaisi.
He/She promised that they would help.
conditional for future promise
Kuulin, että he muuttavat pois.
I heard that they are moving away.
present for current/future
