A2 Finnish GrammarPresent Perfect Tense

Connect past actions to the present using Finnish present perfect (perfekti). Formed with 'olla' + past participle, this tense describes completed actions and experiences. It is the most common past tense in spoken Finnish.

1Formation of Present Perfect

Finnish present perfect uses the auxiliary verb 'olla' (conjugated for person) plus the past participle. The participle ends in -nut/-nyt (singular) or -neet (plural). This tense is very common in spoken Finnish, often replacing simple past.

Present Perfect Formation

PersonOllaParticipleExample
minäolen-nut/-nytolen puhunut (I have spoken)
sinäolet-nut/-nytolet syönyt (you have eaten)
hänon-nut/-nyton tullut (he/she has come)
meolemme-neetolemme nähneet (we have seen)

Examples

2Forming the Past Participle

The past participle (-nut/-nyt for singular, -neet for plural) is formed from the verb stem. Remove the infinitive ending and add the participle suffix. Vowel harmony applies: -nut after a,o,u and -nyt after ä,ö,y. The participle agrees with the subject in number.

Past Participle Formation

InfinitiveStemSingularPlural
puhua (speak)puhu-puhunutpuhuneet
syödä (eat)syö-syönytsyöneet
tulla (come)tul-tulluttulleet

3Negative Present Perfect

Negative present perfect uses the negative verb (en, et, ei...) plus 'ole' plus the past participle. The participle stays the same regardless of person, but still agrees in number with the subject (singular or plural).

Negative Present Perfect

minäen ole + -nuten ole nähnyt (I haven't seen)
sinäet ole + -nutet ole tehnyt (you haven't done)
