Long ago, there was a peaceful kingdom surrounded by tall mountains. The people lived happily under the rule of a wise and gentle king. One day, a powerful witch arrived at the castle gates. She demanded that the king give her the royal crown. The king refused because the crown belonged to the people. The witch became furious and raised her hands to the sky. 'If I cannot have the crown, then no one shall!' she screamed. Dark clouds gathered above the kingdom as she spoke terrible words. A cold wind swept through the streets and everyone froze in place. The people, the animals, and even the birds turned to grey stone. The witch laughed and disappeared into a cloud of black smoke. Years passed, and the kingdom remained silent and still. Beyond the mountains, in a small village, lived a young shepherd named Thomas. Thomas had heard stories about the cursed kingdom since he was a child. Most people believed these were just old tales to frighten children. But Thomas always wondered if there was truth in the legends. One morning, while searching for a lost sheep, he climbed higher than usual. At the top of the mountain pass, he saw something that stopped his heart. Below him stretched a vast kingdom of grey stone buildings and statues. The statues were people frozen in their daily activities. Thomas knew immediately that the stories had been true all along. He carefully made his way down into the silent streets. A stone merchant stood behind his cart, forever reaching for coins. Children were caught mid-laugh, their stone faces still smiling. Thomas felt deep sadness as he walked through the frozen town. Near the fountain, he noticed an old woman who was not made of stone. She sat on a bench, wrapped in a worn grey cloak. 'You can see me,' she said with surprise in her voice. 'Who are you?' Thomas asked, approaching her carefully. 'I am the queen of this kingdom, or what remains of it.' She explained that the witch's curse had spared her for a cruel reason. 'She wanted me to watch my people suffer for eternity,' the queen said. Thomas asked if there was any way to break the curse. The queen's eyes filled with a tiny spark of hope. 'There is a way, but no one has ever succeeded,' she whispered. Three golden keys were hidden throughout the kingdom. Each key represented a virtue: courage, kindness, and wisdom. Only someone who possessed all three virtues could find them. 'I am just a simple shepherd,' Thomas said doubtfully. 'Perhaps that is exactly what is needed,' the queen replied with a gentle smile. Thomas decided to try, even though he was afraid. The queen told him the first key was guarded by a beast in the dark forest. Thomas walked for hours until he reached the edge of the forest. The trees were so thick that almost no light could pass through. Strange sounds echoed from deep within the shadows. His legs wanted to run away, but he forced himself to continue. In a clearing, he found a massive wolf with silver fur. The wolf growled and showed its enormous teeth. Thomas noticed something shining around the wolf's neck: a golden key. He also noticed that the wolf's paw was caught in an old trap. Instead of attacking, Thomas slowly approached the injured animal. 'I will not hurt you,' he said softly. With careful hands, he opened the trap and freed the wolf's paw. The wolf stopped growling and looked at Thomas with understanding eyes. It lowered its head and allowed Thomas to take the first key. Thomas had shown courage by entering the forest and kindness by helping the wolf. The queen had said the second key lay at the bottom of a frozen lake. Thomas found the lake in the center of the kingdom. The water had turned to ice so thick that he could not see through it. An old man sat beside the lake, fishing through a small hole in the ice. Unlike the statues, this man could move and speak. 'I know why you have come,' the old man said without looking up. 'Can you help me reach the key?' Thomas asked. 'I will give you a riddle. Answer correctly, and the ice will melt.' The old man asked: 'What is stronger than steel but can be broken by a single word?' Thomas thought for a long time about the strange riddle. He remembered how his mother's trust in him had made him strong. He also remembered how a single lie had once broken that trust. 'The answer is trust,' Thomas said with confidence. The old man smiled, and the ice began to crack and melt away. At the bottom of the shallow water lay the second golden key. Thomas waded in and retrieved it carefully. Now he had to find the third and final key. The queen had warned that this key was the most difficult to obtain. It was hidden in the highest tower of the castle. The tower was guarded by the witch's shadow, a creature of pure darkness. Thomas climbed the winding stairs for what felt like hours. At the top, he found a room filled with mirrors. In each mirror, he saw a different version of himself. One showed him as a wealthy king, another as a powerful warrior. The shadow spoke from the darkness: 'Choose who you want to become.' 'If you choose wisely, the key is yours.' Thomas looked at all the magnificent versions of himself. Then he noticed one small mirror that the shadow had tried to hide. In that mirror, he simply saw himself: a shepherd with kind eyes. 'I choose to remain who I am,' Thomas said firmly. The shadow screamed as all the other mirrors shattered. The third golden key appeared in Thomas's hand. Thomas ran back to the queen with all three keys. She led him to a golden door beneath the castle. The door had three keyholes shaped like a heart, a star, and a sun. Thomas placed each key in its proper place. A warm golden light burst from the door and spread across the kingdom. The stone statues began to crack as color returned to the world. People stretched and looked around in confusion. Children continued laughing as if no time had passed. The king embraced his queen with tears of joy. Thomas was honored as a hero throughout the land. But when offered riches and titles, he politely refused. He returned to his village, happy to be a shepherd once more.
