Maria walked into the coffee shop on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. She ordered her usual latte and found a seat by the window. As she waited for her drink, she looked around the busy cafe. Suddenly, she noticed a familiar face at the counter. The woman had long dark hair and a bright smile. Maria's heart began to beat faster. Could it really be Sofia, her best friend from childhood? They had not seen each other for ten years. Sofia had moved to another city after high school. They had promised to stay in touch, but life got busy. Slowly, their phone calls became less frequent. Eventually, they lost contact completely. Maria stood up and walked toward the woman. 'Sofia? Is that you?' she asked nervously. The woman turned around and her eyes grew wide. 'Maria! Oh my goodness, I cannot believe it!' Sofia exclaimed. They hugged each other tightly for a long moment. Both women had tears in their eyes. 'How long has it been?' Sofia asked. 'Ten years, I think,' Maria replied. 'That is far too long,' Sofia said with a smile. They sat down together at Maria's table. Sofia explained that she had just moved back to town. She had found a new job at the local hospital. 'I am a nurse now,' Sofia said proudly. Maria told her about her own life. She worked as a teacher at the elementary school. She had gotten married three years ago. 'Do you remember our secret hiding place?' Maria asked. Sofia laughed loudly at the memory. 'The old tree house in your backyard! How could I forget?' They spent hours talking about their childhood memories. They remembered summer vacations at the lake. They talked about their favorite teachers from school. Sofia mentioned their old neighbor, Mr. Johnson. 'He always gave us cookies,' she remembered. Maria smiled at the sweet memory. 'I am so sorry we lost touch,' Maria said. 'Me too. But we found each other again,' Sofia replied. They exchanged phone numbers immediately. Sofia also gave Maria her new address. She lived only two streets away from Maria's house. 'We are neighbors again!' Maria said happily. They made plans to meet for dinner the following week. Maria wanted to introduce Sofia to her husband. Sofia was excited to meet him. The afternoon passed quickly as they talked. Before they knew it, the sun was setting. 'I should go home now,' Sofia said reluctantly. 'I still have boxes to unpack.' They hugged goodbye at the door of the coffee shop. 'Promise me we will not lose touch again,' Maria said. 'I promise,' Sofia answered sincerely. Maria walked home with a big smile on her face. She felt grateful for this unexpected meeting. True friendships can survive many years apart. Sometimes life brings old friends back together.
