I stood frozen as the pirates closed in around me. Long John Silver raised his hand to stop them. 'No one touches the boy,' he ordered firmly. The pirates grumbled but obeyed their leader. 'So, Jim,' Silver said calmly, 'here we are.' I asked him what had happened to my friends. Silver explained that the doctor had made a deal. 'Your friends gave us the stockade and the treasure map.' 'In exchange, we let them go free.' I could not believe Doctor Livesey would give up the map. But Silver showed me the paper, and it was real. 'Now you must choose, Jim,' Silver continued. 'Join us, or die with your friends when we find them.' I was angry and afraid, but I stood tall. 'I will never join you pirates!' I declared. 'You are murderers and thieves.' The pirates shouted angrily and reached for their weapons. But I kept talking, telling them the truth. 'I was in the apple barrel. I heard everything Silver planned.' 'I warned the captain. I cut the ship loose tonight.' 'I killed Israel Hands. The Hispaniola is hidden where you'll never find her.' The pirates stared at me in shock. Silver's eyes narrowed, but I saw a strange respect in them. 'You're a brave lad,' he said quietly. One pirate named George stepped forward. 'I've had enough of Silver's leadership,' George growled. 'Let's vote him out and choose a new captain.' The pirates went outside to discuss. Silver turned to me with a serious face. 'They're going to give me the black spot,' he whispered. 'If they do, I'm a dead man, and so are you.' 'Let's make a deal, Jim. I'll save your life if you save mine.' I did not trust Silver, but I had no choice. The pirates returned and handed Silver a piece of paper. It was the black spot, cut from a page of a Bible. Silver read the charges against him calmly. Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out the treasure map. The pirates' anger vanished instantly. 'You still want to vote me out?' Silver laughed. They crowded around the map, shouting with excitement. 'Tomorrow we find the treasure!' George cried. Silver was back in command, at least for now. The next morning, Doctor Livesey arrived at the stockade. He came every day to check on the wounded pirates. He was shocked to see me among them. Silver let me speak with the doctor alone outside. 'Doctor, I'm so sorry,' I said with tears in my eyes. 'I was foolish to leave the stockade alone.' The doctor told me about the ship I had rescued. 'You saved us, Jim. That was very brave.' He wanted me to run away with him right then. But I had given my word to Silver, and I would not break it. 'I cannot run, Doctor. I promised to stay.' The doctor nodded sadly but respected my decision. He turned to Silver before leaving. 'Silver, do not be in a hurry to find the treasure.' 'And when you do find trouble, remember who saved Jim.' Silver looked puzzled by these strange words. What did the doctor know that we did not? Soon we would discover the truth about Treasure Island.
