B1 Swedish GrammarPast Perfect Tense

Describe actions completed before another past action using the Swedish past perfect (pluskvamperfekt). Form it with 'hade' + supine and use it to establish clear sequences in storytelling, explanations, and complex narratives.

1Formation: hade + Supine

The Swedish past perfect is formed with 'hade' (had) + the supine form of the main verb. The supine is the same form used for present perfect (har + supine). Remember that 'hade' never changes - it stays the same for all subjects.

Past Perfect Formation

SubjectAuxiliarySupineEnglish
jaghadeätitI had eaten
duhadesovityou had slept
han/honhadekommithe/she had come
vihadegåttwe had gone
dehadesettthey had seen

Examples

Jag hade redan ätit när hon kom.

I had already eaten when she came.

hade + supine (ätit)

De hade bott i Stockholm i tio år.

They had lived in Stockholm for ten years.

hade + supine (bott)

Han hade aldrig sett havet förut.

He had never seen the sea before.

hade + supine (sett)

Vi hade precis gått när det började regna.

We had just left when it started raining.

hade + supine (gått)

2Supine Forms by Verb Group

Swedish verbs form their supine differently based on their conjugation group. Group 1 (-ar verbs) add -at, Group 2 (-er verbs) add -t, Group 3 (-r verbs) add -tt, and Group 4 (irregular) have unique forms. The supine is identical to present perfect.

3Using Past Perfect for Sequence

Use past perfect to show that one action happened before another in the past. The earlier action takes past perfect (hade + supine), while the later action takes simple past (preterite). Common time markers: innan (before), redan (already), just/precis (just), aldrig förut (never before).

Time Sequence

Earlier Action (Past Perfect)Later Action (Simple Past)

De hade gåttinnan vi kom
Han hade somnatnär filmen började

The train had already left when I arrived at the station.

redan emphasizes completion

4Past Perfect in Reported Speech and Conditionals

Past perfect is used in reported speech when the original statement was in present perfect or past tense. It also appears in unreal conditionals about the past (om + past perfect, skulle ha + supine). This is similar to English usage.
