1Basic Negation with Inte
Swedish uses 'inte' (not) to negate verbs. In main clauses, 'inte' comes directly after the verb: 'Jag talar svenska' (I speak Swedish) → 'Jag talar inte svenska' (I don't speak Swedish). Unlike English, Swedish doesn't use auxiliary 'do' for negation.

2Negation with Är and Har
The verbs 'är' (is/are) and 'har' (have/has) are negated the same way—just add 'inte' after them. 'Jag är inte' (I am not), 'Hon har inte' (She doesn't have). These are among the most frequently used negative constructions.

3Other Negative Words
Beyond 'inte', Swedish has other negative words: 'nej' (no), 'aldrig' (never), 'ingenting/inget' (nothing), 'ingen' (no one/nobody), 'ingenstans' (nowhere). These words also follow the verb in main clauses. Double negatives are not used in Swedish.

4Negation in Questions and Answers
To answer a question negatively, use 'nej' (no) followed by a negative statement. In negative questions, 'inte' still follows the verb: 'Talar du inte svenska?' (Don't you speak Swedish?). Short answers can use just 'nej' or 'nej, det gör jag inte' (no, I don't).
