1Forming Adverbs with -mente
Most manner adverbs are formed by adding -mente to the feminine singular form of the adjective: rápida + mente = rapidamente (quickly). Adjectives ending in -e or consonants add -mente directly: triste → tristemente, fácil → facilmente. When two -mente adverbs are joined, only the last keeps -mente.

Sentence adverb at beginning
Ela trabalha rápida e eficientemente.
She works quickly and efficiently.
Only last adverb keeps -mente
Obviamente, ele não sabia a resposta.
Obviously, he didn't know the answer.

2Types of Adverbs
Portuguese has several adverb categories: manner (como - rapidamente, bem, mal), place (onde - aqui, ali, lá, perto, longe), time (quando - hoje, amanhã, agora, sempre, nunca), frequency (quantas vezes - sempre, frequentemente, às vezes), degree (quanto - muito, pouco, bastante, demais).

3Adverb Position
Manner adverbs typically follow the verb: Ela fala bem. Frequency adverbs can precede or follow: Sempre vou / Vou sempre. Degree adverbs precede what they modify: muito bom. Sentence adverbs (opinion, certainty) usually start the sentence: Felizmente, chegámos. Never separate auxiliary and main verb in compound tenses.

4Adverbial Expressions
Many adverbial ideas are expressed with phrases rather than single words: de repente (suddenly), por acaso (by chance), de vez em quando (from time to time), de propósito (on purpose), com certeza (certainly). These are often more natural than -mente forms in conversation.
