1Relative Clauses with Que

Que (that, which, who) is the most common relative pronoun and can refer to people or things. It connects a subordinate clause to the main clause. Unlike English, que cannot be omitted.

o que = what/that which

2Quem and Onde

Quem (who/whom) refers only to people and is used after prepositions. Onde (where) refers to places. O qual/a qual/os quais/as quais are more formal alternatives.

3Noun Clauses

Noun clauses function as subjects or objects, introduced by que. They follow verbs of thinking, saying, feeling, or wanting. The conjunction que cannot be omitted in Portuguese.

4Indirect Questions

Indirect questions are introduced by question words (quem, o que, onde, quando, como, por que) or se (whether). Word order is the same as statements, not questions.
