1The Basic Rule

In Dutch, most adjectives add -e when placed before a noun. The main exception is with indefinite articles (een) before het-words (neuter singular nouns). This rule is fundamental to Dutch and applies in almost all cases.

2De-words vs Het-words

De-words (common gender) always take adjectives with -e, regardless of the article. Het-words (neuter) take -e with definite articles but no ending with 'een' or no article in singular. Remembering noun genders is essential for correct adjective endings.

fiets = de-word, so 'nieuwe' with -e

The new book is interesting.

het-word with 'het': 'nieuwe' gets -e

Ik heb geen dure auto.

I don't have an expensive car.

auto = de-word: always -e

3Special Cases and Exceptions

Some adjectives change spelling when adding -e. Adjectives ending in -en never add -e. Some materials and colors have special forms. Additionally, adjectives used predicatively (after the noun) never take endings.
