1Depuis (Since/For Ongoing Actions)
Depuis expresses duration from a starting point continuing to the present. It's used with present tense in French for ongoing actions: J'habite ici depuis 2010 (I've lived here since 2010). Depuis can indicate a specific point (depuis lundi) or duration (depuis trois jours). English uses present perfect, but French uses present tense.

2Pendant (During/For Completed Actions)
Pendant expresses duration of a completed action: J'ai travaillé pendant trois heures (I worked for three hours). Use pendant with past tense for actions that are finished. For future duration, use pour: Je pars pour deux semaines. Pendant answers the question 'for how long?' when the action is complete.

3Il y a (Ago)
Il y a means 'ago' when expressing how long before now something happened. It's placed before the time expression: Il y a trois jours (three days ago). Use past tense with il y a. Note the difference from depuis: il y a marks when something happened, depuis marks when it started and continues.

4Avant, Après, Jusqu'à (Before, After, Until)
Avant means 'before' and après means 'after.' Both can be followed by nouns or infinitives: avant le dîner, avant de partir. Jusqu'à means 'until' and marks an endpoint: jusqu'à demain, jusqu'à midi. These prepositions are essential for sequencing events and setting time limits.
