The Little Mermaid

Deep beneath the ocean waves lived a young mermaid princess. She was the youngest of six daughters of the Sea King. The little mermaid had a beautiful voice that enchanted everyone who heard it. She spent her days swimming through coral gardens and playing with fish. Unlike her sisters, she dreamed of the world above the water. Her grandmother told her stories about humans and their strange ways. The old mermaid explained that humans walked on two legs instead of swimming. She described the beautiful flowers, birds, and forests that existed on land. The little mermaid listened with wonder and longing in her heart. When a mermaid turned fifteen, she was allowed to rise to the surface. The little mermaid counted the days until her fifteenth birthday arrived. Finally, the special day came and she swam eagerly toward the light above. She broke through the surface and saw the sky for the first time. The stars sparkled like diamonds and the moon glowed softly overhead. A magnificent ship floated nearby, decorated with hundreds of colorful lanterns. Music and laughter drifted across the water from the celebration aboard. The mermaid swam closer and peered through a window on the ship. She saw a handsome young prince celebrating his eighteenth birthday. Her heart beat faster as she watched him dance and smile. She had never seen anyone so wonderful in all her life. Suddenly, a terrible storm arose and dark clouds covered the sky. Lightning flashed and thunder roared across the churning waters. The ship was tossed violently by the enormous waves. The mermaid watched in horror as the vessel began to sink. She saw the prince fall into the cold, dark water. Without hesitation, she dove down and pulled him to the surface. She held his head above the waves throughout the long night. By morning, the storm had passed and she swam him to shore. She laid him gently on the sandy beach near a beautiful temple. A young woman from the temple discovered the prince and called for help. The mermaid hid behind some rocks and watched as he was rescued. The prince opened his eyes and thanked the temple maiden for saving him. The little mermaid felt sad that he did not know the truth. She returned to her underwater kingdom but could not forget the prince. She stopped singing and spent her days staring at the surface above. Her sisters noticed her sadness and asked what troubled her heart. She confessed her love for the human prince she had saved. They tried to comfort her but nothing could ease her longing. The mermaid decided to visit the sea witch who lived in a dark cave. The witch was known for her powerful magic and dangerous bargains. The young princess swam bravely through forests of frightening sea creatures. She finally reached the cave where the witch waited with a knowing smile. The witch said she knew why the mermaid had come to her. She offered to give the mermaid human legs in exchange for her voice. The witch warned that every step would feel like walking on sharp knives. She added that if the prince married another, the mermaid would die. Despite the terrible conditions, the mermaid agreed to the bargain. The witch took her beautiful voice and gave her a magic potion. The mermaid swam to the shore and drank the potion at dawn. She felt incredible pain as her tail split into two human legs. She collapsed on the beach, unable to speak or walk properly. The prince found her there and was captivated by her mysterious beauty. He wrapped her in his cloak and brought her to his castle. Though she could not speak, her eyes expressed deep love and devotion. The prince grew fond of her and took her everywhere with him. She danced for him despite the agony each step caused her. He told her she reminded him of the maiden who saved his life. The mermaid longed to tell him the truth but had no voice. The prince announced that he would marry the princess from a neighboring kingdom. He explained that his parents had arranged the match for political reasons. When he met his bride, he recognized her as the temple maiden. He believed she was the one who had rescued him from the sea. The prince was overjoyed and declared his love for the princess. The wedding was announced and the mermaid felt her heart breaking. On the wedding night, she stood alone on the ship looking at the sea. Her sisters appeared at the surface with their beautiful hair cut short. They explained that they had given their hair to the witch for a knife. If the mermaid killed the prince before dawn, she could become a mermaid again. She took the knife and crept silently into the bridal chamber. The prince lay sleeping peacefully beside his new bride. The mermaid looked at his handsome face and could not harm him. She threw the knife into the sea and waited for the sunrise. As the first rays of light appeared, she felt herself dissolving. But instead of becoming sea foam, she rose into the air. She had become a daughter of the air, a spirit of light and kindness. Other spirits welcomed her and explained that her selfless love had saved her. She would spend three hundred years doing good deeds for humankind. After that time, she would earn an immortal soul of her own. The little mermaid smiled with joy and gratitude for her new existence. She floated above the ship and blessed the sleeping prince one last time. Then she rose higher into the sky to begin her new journey. She learned that true love sometimes means letting go of what we desire. Her sacrifice and compassion had transformed her into something even more beautiful. The little mermaid found peace knowing that love itself was her greatest treasure.
