Sarah had been dating David for eight months, and tonight was the big night. She was finally going to meet his parents. Her hands were shaking as she tried to apply her makeup. 'What if they don't like me?' she thought to herself. David had told her not to worry, but that was easier said than done. She changed her outfit three times before finally settling on a simple blue dress. David arrived at seven o'clock to pick her up. 'You look beautiful,' he said with a warm smile. 'I'm so nervous,' Sarah admitted. 'My parents are really easy-going,' David reassured her. 'They're going to love you.' The drive to his parents' house took about twenty minutes. Sarah used the time to take deep breaths and calm herself down. David held her hand and told her funny stories about his childhood. By the time they pulled into the driveway, she felt a little better. The house was a cozy two-story building with a beautiful garden. Sarah noticed the flowers were perfectly arranged. 'Your mom must love gardening,' she said. 'Actually, that's my dad's hobby,' David laughed. The front door opened before they could ring the bell. A woman with kind eyes and gray hair greeted them warmly. 'You must be Sarah! I've heard so much about you,' she exclaimed. She pulled Sarah into a gentle hug. 'I'm Margaret, David's mother.' Sarah immediately felt more at ease. David's father, Robert, appeared from the living room. He was a tall man with glasses and a friendly face. 'Welcome to our home,' he said, shaking her hand. 'Thank you for having me,' Sarah replied politely. The house smelled wonderful, like roast chicken and fresh bread. Margaret had clearly put a lot of effort into the dinner. They moved into the living room to chat before the meal. Sarah sat on the sofa next to David, still feeling a bit tense. 'David tells us you work in marketing,' Robert said. 'Yes, I work for a small company in the city center,' Sarah answered. 'That sounds interesting! What kind of products do you promote?' Margaret asked. Sarah explained her job, slowly feeling more comfortable. The conversation flowed easily, and she began to relax. Then Margaret mentioned her love for Italian cooking. 'I actually spent a year studying in Italy!' Sarah said excitedly. Margaret's eyes lit up with interest. 'Really? Where did you live?' she asked eagerly. 'In Florence. It was the best year of my life,' Sarah replied. They spent the next fifteen minutes talking about Italian food and culture. David smiled, happy to see his mother and girlfriend getting along. Soon it was time for dinner. The dining table was beautifully set with candles and nice plates. Sarah offered to help bring the food from the kitchen. As she carried a bowl of salad, she accidentally tripped on the rug. The bowl flew out of her hands and landed on the floor. Lettuce and tomatoes scattered everywhere. Sarah's face turned bright red with embarrassment. 'I'm so sorry!' she exclaimed, feeling absolutely mortified. But instead of being upset, everyone started laughing. 'Don't worry at all!' Margaret said cheerfully. 'I once dropped an entire turkey on Christmas Eve.' Robert nodded, 'And I've broken more dishes than I can count.' David helped Sarah clean up the mess while his parents prepared more salad. 'See? They really are easy-going,' David whispered to her. Sarah couldn't help but smile at the situation. The rest of the dinner went smoothly. The roast chicken was delicious, and so were the roasted vegetables. They talked about everything from travel to books to music. Sarah discovered that Robert was also a big fan of jazz music. 'You should come to the jazz festival with us next month!' he suggested. 'I'd love that,' Sarah replied genuinely. For dessert, Margaret served homemade apple pie. 'This is the best apple pie I've ever had,' Sarah said honestly. Margaret beamed with pride at the compliment. 'I'll give you the recipe if you'd like,' she offered. After dinner, they moved back to the living room for coffee. Robert showed Sarah old photo albums from David's childhood. 'Look at him here, he was such a cute baby!' Margaret pointed at a photo. David pretended to be embarrassed, but Sarah could tell he was enjoying it. There were photos of family vacations, school plays, and birthday parties. Sarah learned that David had been in the school choir. 'He never told me he could sing!' she said, surprised. 'I can't really,' David admitted with a laugh. 'They just needed more people.' The evening flew by faster than Sarah had expected. Before she knew it, it was almost eleven o'clock. 'We should probably get going,' David said reluctantly. Margaret hugged Sarah tightly at the door. 'It was wonderful meeting you,' she said warmly. 'You must come back soon.' Robert shook her hand and gave her a friendly pat on the shoulder. 'Don't forget about the jazz festival,' he reminded her. On the drive home, Sarah felt completely different from before. All her nervousness had disappeared. 'That went really well, didn't it?' David asked with a smile. 'Better than I could have imagined,' Sarah agreed. 'Your parents are wonderful people.' 'I told you there was nothing to worry about,' David said. Sarah laughed, thinking about the salad incident. 'Even after I threw salad all over their floor?' 'Especially after that,' David laughed. 'Now they have a funny story to tell.' Sarah realized that meeting the parents wasn't as scary as she had thought. Sometimes the things we worry about the most turn out just fine. She was already looking forward to seeing them again.
