Once upon a time, there lived a kind girl named Cinderella. She lived with her stepmother and two stepsisters. Her stepmother was very cruel to her. Cinderella had to do all the housework. She cleaned the floors and washed the dishes. She cooked the meals and made the beds. Her stepsisters were lazy and mean. They wore beautiful dresses and went to parties. Cinderella wore old, dirty clothes. One day, an invitation arrived from the palace. The prince was having a grand ball. Every young woman in the kingdom was invited. The stepsisters were very excited. They bought new dresses and shoes. Cinderella wanted to go too. But her stepmother laughed at her. You cannot go to the ball, she said. You have no dress and too much work to do. On the night of the ball, Cinderella was alone and sad. She sat in the kitchen and cried. Suddenly, a bright light appeared. It was her fairy godmother! Do not cry, my child, said the fairy. You will go to the ball tonight. The fairy waved her magic wand. A pumpkin became a golden carriage. Mice became beautiful white horses. Cinderella's old dress became a stunning ball gown. On her feet appeared glass slippers. You must leave before midnight, warned the fairy. At midnight, the magic will end. Cinderella arrived at the palace. Everyone looked at the beautiful stranger. The prince asked her to dance. They danced together all evening. The prince fell in love with her. Cinderella was so happy. Then she heard the clock strike midnight. She ran down the palace stairs. She lost one glass slipper on the steps. The prince found the slipper. He searched the whole kingdom for its owner. He came to Cinderella's house. The stepsisters tried on the slipper. It did not fit either of them. Then Cinderella tried it on. The slipper fit perfectly! The prince recognized her immediately. He asked her to marry him. Cinderella said yes with joy. They got married and lived happily ever after.
