The next Thursday, I went back to the Time Traveller's house. The same guests were there: the Medical Man, the Psychologist, Filby, and the others. But our host was not in the room. 'He left a note,' said the Medical Man. 'He asks us to start dinner without him.' We sat down at the table, but the conversation was nervous. We all wondered where the Time Traveller could be. 'Perhaps he forgot about the dinner,' Filby suggested. 'Or perhaps,' said the Psychologist quietly, 'he actually used that machine.' We all laughed, but the laughter was uncomfortable. Suddenly, the door burst open. The Time Traveller stood in the doorway. We all gasped at the sight of him. His clothes were dirty and torn. His face was pale and had a strange, wild look. There was a cut on his chin, still bleeding. His hair was messy, and there was dirt on his face. He looked like a man who had been through a terrible ordeal. 'Good heavens, man!' cried the Medical Man. 'What happened to you?' The Time Traveller did not answer at first. He walked slowly to the table and sat down heavily in a chair. 'I need food,' he said in a weak voice. 'I have not eaten properly for... I do not know how long.' The Medical Man poured him a glass of wine. The Time Traveller drank it quickly and asked for more. He ate some meat like a starving animal. We watched him in silence, too shocked to speak. Finally, he pushed his plate away and looked at us. 'I suppose you want to know what happened,' he said. 'Of course we do!' exclaimed Filby. 'Where have you been? What happened to your clothes?' The Time Traveller smiled weakly. 'I have been to the future,' he said simply. There was complete silence in the room. 'Let me wash and change my clothes,' he continued. 'Then I will tell you everything.' 'But you must promise me one thing.' 'What is it?' asked the Psychologist. 'You must not interrupt me,' said the Time Traveller. 'I am too tired to argue.' 'I need to tell my story from beginning to end.' We all agreed. He left the room, and we waited anxiously. 'Do you think he really traveled through time?' Filby whispered. 'Something extraordinary has happened to him,' the Medical Man replied. 'That much is certain.' When the Time Traveller returned, he looked better but still exhausted. He sat down in his favorite armchair by the fire. We gathered around him in a circle. 'Very well,' he said. 'I will begin at the beginning.'
