The Time Traveller finished his story and looked at us. The fire had burned low, and the room was quiet. None of us knew what to say. 'Do you expect us to believe this?' Filby asked finally. The Time Traveller smiled sadly. 'I do not expect anything,' he said. 'I have told you what I saw. That is all.' He reached into his pocket and pulled out two dried flowers. They were strange flowers, unlike any I had ever seen. 'Weena put these in my pocket,' he said quietly. 'They are the only proof I have.' We left his house that night, full of doubt and wonder. The next day, I went back to see him. I found him in his laboratory, preparing the time machine. 'I am going back,' he told me. 'I have to know what happened to Weena.' 'And I want to bring back real proof.' 'Wait for me here. I will return in half an hour.' He climbed onto the machine and smiled at me. Then he pushed the lever. The machine flickered and became transparent. Then it vanished completely, along with the Time Traveller. I waited for him that day. I waited the next day, and the day after that. But the Time Traveller never came back. Three years have passed now since that day. I still have the two strange flowers that he left behind. Scientists cannot identify what kind of flowers they are. They say no such species exists on Earth. Where is the Time Traveller now? Is he wandering through some distant age of the Earth? Did he find Weena and rescue her? Or is he trapped somewhere, unable to return? I think about his story often. About the Eloi and the Morlocks. About what humanity might become. His vision of the future was dark and frightening. But perhaps it does not have to be that way. Perhaps we can choose a different path. The future is not written yet. It is still ours to make.
