The next morning, Holmes and I made our final preparations. 'First, we must visit Laura Lyons,' said Holmes. 'She holds an important piece of evidence.' We traveled to Coombe Tracey together. Mrs. Lyons was surprised to see us. 'I am investigating the death of Sir Charles,' said Holmes. 'I know you wrote to him on the night he died.' 'I told Dr. Watson that I never went to meet him,' she said. 'Yes, because someone told you not to go,' said Holmes. 'That person was Mr. Jack Stapleton.' Her face turned white. 'How do you know that?' she whispered. 'He is not who he claims to be,' continued Holmes. 'The woman he calls his sister is actually his wife.' Mrs. Lyons looked shocked and angry. 'His wife? But he promised to marry me!' 'He said he would help me get a divorce.' 'He was using you,' said Holmes bluntly. 'He made you write that letter to lure Sir Charles outside.' 'Then he told you not to go, so Sir Charles would be alone.' 'He used a terrifying hound to frighten Sir Charles to death.' Mrs. Lyons burst into tears. 'I had no idea! I swear I did not know!' 'Will you help us stop him?' asked Holmes. 'I will tell you everything,' she said firmly. She confirmed Holmes's theories about Stapleton. Now we had a witness against him. We returned to Baskerville Hall to prepare. 'Sir Henry, you must go to dinner at Merripit House tonight,' said Holmes. 'Tell Stapleton that Watson and I have returned to London.' 'But walk home alone across the moor afterwards.' 'Across the moor? At night?' Sir Henry looked worried. 'We will be hiding nearby,' I assured him. 'We will protect you from any danger.' 'Very well,' said Sir Henry bravely. 'I will do whatever is necessary.' Holmes also sent a telegram to Inspector Lestrade in London. 'We need an official police presence for the arrest.' Lestrade arrived that afternoon by train. 'What is this about, Holmes?' asked the inspector. 'Murder,' said Holmes simply. 'And attempted murder as well.' He explained the situation to Lestrade. The inspector's eyes grew wide with surprise. 'A hound that frightens people to death? Remarkable!' 'Tonight we will catch him in the act,' said Holmes. That evening, Sir Henry left for Merripit House. Holmes, Lestrade, and I followed at a distance. We hid in the bushes near Stapleton's house. Through the window, we could see Sir Henry having dinner. Stapleton talked and smiled, but I knew he was plotting murder. The hours passed slowly. Then a thick fog began to roll in from the moor. 'This fog is bad,' said Holmes grimly. 'We may not be able to see Sir Henry when he leaves.' The fog grew thicker and thicker. Soon we could barely see the house itself. 'We must move closer,' whispered Holmes. We crept toward the front door. The trap was set.
