Holmes and I sat outside the stone hut as darkness fell. 'Tell me everything you know,' I said eagerly. 'I have been here for several days,' said Holmes. 'That boy you heard about has been bringing me food.' 'I have been watching everyone who lives near the Hall.' 'And what have you discovered?' I asked. 'I have found our enemy,' said Holmes grimly. 'A clever and dangerous man.' 'Who is it?' I demanded. 'I will tell you soon,' said Holmes. 'But first, tell me about Laura Lyons.' I told him everything she had said. 'Excellent work, Watson,' he said with approval. 'She is being used by someone else.' 'Someone told her to send that letter to Sir Charles.' 'And then told her not to go.' 'But why would anyone do that?' I wondered. 'To make sure Sir Charles would be alone at the gate.' 'Where he could be frightened to death.' Suddenly, a terrible scream echoed across the moor. It was a cry of terror and agony. Then we heard the howl of a hound. 'The hound!' I cried. 'Come, Watson!' Holmes grabbed my arm. 'God, I hope we are not too late!' We ran across the dark moor toward the sounds. The ground was rocky and dangerous. We stumbled several times in the darkness. Another scream tore through the night. And then there was silence. 'This way!' called Holmes. We climbed over a ridge of rocks. Below us, we could see a dark shape on the ground. It was the body of a man. He lay face down, his neck twisted at an ugly angle. He had fallen from the cliff above. 'Sir Henry!' I gasped in horror. The man wore the same tweed suit Sir Henry often wore. Holmes knelt beside the body with a groan. 'I have failed,' he said bitterly. But then he struck a match to see the man's face. He jumped back with a cry of relief. 'It is not Sir Henry!' he exclaimed. 'This is the convict, Selden!' I looked closely and saw he was right. The dead man had a rough, ugly face. 'But the clothes!' I said. 'Sir Henry must have given them to the Barrymores.' 'And they gave them to Selden.' 'Now I understand the stolen boot!' said Holmes excitedly. 'The hound was tracking Sir Henry's scent!' 'It smelled the clothes and chased Selden by mistake.' The poor convict had run in terror. He had fallen from the cliff trying to escape. 'The hound is real,' I whispered. 'Yes, but not supernatural,' said Holmes. 'Someone is using it as a weapon.' 'And I know exactly who it is.' 'We must act quickly, Watson.' 'Sir Henry is still in grave danger.'
