On November 14th, the ship arrived in Yokohama, Japan. Passepartout was amazed by the beautiful city. The streets were filled with people in colorful clothes. Temples with curved roofs rose above the houses. Gardens with cherry trees decorated every corner. Fogg checked the schedule for ships to San Francisco. The next ship would leave the following morning. They had one day to rest and explore. Aouda and Fogg walked through the European quarter. They admired the strange and wonderful sights. Passepartout wandered off alone into the native quarter. He watched acrobats performing in the street. A circus was setting up nearby. The circus master saw Passepartout watching. 'You look like a strong man,' said the circus master. 'Would you like to join our show?' Passepartout remembered his days as a circus performer. He needed money for new clothes. 'I will perform one show,' he agreed. That evening, Passepartout joined the famous Long Noses. These were Japanese acrobats who built human pyramids. They wore long fake noses made of bamboo. Passepartout stood at the bottom of the pyramid. More and more acrobats climbed onto his shoulders. The crowd cheered with excitement. Suddenly, Passepartout saw Fogg in the audience. Without thinking, he ran toward his master. The entire pyramid crashed down. Acrobats tumbled everywhere. 'Master! The ship leaves tomorrow morning!' shouted Passepartout. 'I know,' said Fogg calmly. 'I came to find you.' The next morning, they boarded the General Grant. This steamship would take them across the Pacific Ocean. The crossing would take twenty-two days. Detective Fix was also on board. He now regretted telling Passepartout the truth. The servant avoided him completely. Fogg, however, treated Fix exactly the same as before. He showed no anger or suspicion. The Pacific Ocean stretched endlessly in all directions. Days passed slowly on the water. Fogg played whist every day. Aouda read books and talked with Passepartout. She was growing to admire Fogg more and more. His calm manner and quiet kindness impressed her. She wondered what kind of man he really was. 'Does Mr. Fogg have any family?' she asked Passepartout. 'None that I know of, madam,' he replied. 'He lives alone in London.' Fix continued to watch and wait. In America, he could not arrest Fogg. But once they reached England, everything would change. He decided to help Fogg reach England quickly. Then he would finally arrest him. The weather was good throughout the voyage. The ship made excellent time. On December 3rd, they saw the coast of America. The Golden Gate of San Francisco appeared in the mist. Passepartout was excited to see America. 'We are halfway around the world!' he exclaimed. Fogg checked his notebook. They were exactly on schedule. Not one day gained, not one day lost. They arrived in San Francisco that afternoon. The city was busy and full of energy. They would take the Pacific Railroad across America. The train journey to New York would take seven days. Fogg bought tickets for the evening train. The journey across America would begin at six o'clock.
