The Henrietta reached Liverpool on December 20th. Only six hours remained before Fogg's deadline. The trip from Liverpool to London took five and a half hours. Fogg still had a chance to win the bet. Fogg bought the ruined ship from Captain Speedy. He paid the angry captain a very generous price. The captain's anger turned to amazement. He had made a fortune from this strange journey. Fogg stepped onto British soil at last. Passepartout and Aouda followed close behind. Detective Fix was waiting on the dock. He had finally received his arrest warrant. He walked up to Fogg with determination. 'You are Phileas Fogg?' he asked formally. 'I am,' replied Fogg. 'In the name of the Queen, I arrest you for the robbery of the Bank of England.' Passepartout tried to attack Fix. 'You villain!' he shouted. Fogg calmly stopped his servant. 'Let him do his duty,' said Fogg. Aouda was shocked and confused. 'There must be some mistake!' she cried. Fogg was taken to a customs house and locked in a room. He would wait there until he could be taken to London. Aouda and Passepartout waited outside. They were devastated by this turn of events. The precious hours ticked away. Four o'clock came and went. Five o'clock passed. It was now impossible to reach London by 8:45. Fogg sat alone in his cell, perfectly calm. He did not complain or show any anger. Suddenly, at half past two, the door opened. Detective Fix rushed in, looking very embarrassed. 'Sir, I... I am terribly sorry,' he stammered. 'The real robber was arrested three days ago.' 'You are free to go.' Fogg stood up slowly. He walked toward Fix. For once, his calm expression changed. He punched Fix square in the face. The detective fell to the ground. 'Well punched!' cheered Passepartout. But there was no time for celebration. Fogg checked his watch. It was 2:33 PM. He had less than six hours to reach London. But the train journey alone took five and a half hours. There were no express trains available. Fogg hired a special train at great expense. It left Liverpool at three o'clock. The train raced through the English countryside. But traffic on the tracks caused delays. They arrived in London at ten minutes before nine. Fogg had lost his bet by five minutes. After traveling around the entire world, he had failed. He had been just five minutes too late. Fogg returned home to Savile Row. He said nothing about his disappointment. 'I apologize for ruining your life,' said Passepartout sadly. 'If I had not gotten into trouble so often...' 'You have nothing to apologize for,' said Fogg. Aouda looked at Fogg with deep concern. He had spent all his money on this journey. Now he had lost everything. The twenty thousand pounds he had bet was gone. Fogg faced his ruin with quiet dignity. He went to his room and closed the door. Aouda and Passepartout were left alone. They wondered what would happen next.
